The UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) is conducted in two stages
Preliminary Exam –
• The preliminary exam consists of two objective-type papers (multiple choice questions)
• Each paper is of 200 marks and 2 hours duration
• The minimum qualifying marks for each paper is 33%
• The marks obtained in the preliminary exam are not counted for the final ranking, but only for the purpose of shortlisting the candidates for the main exam.
Main Exam –
• The main exam is a written examination consisting of nine papers
• The first two papers are of qualifying nature and the marks obtained in these papers are not counted for the final ranking
• The remaining seven papers carry a total of 1750 marks
• The duration of each paper is 3 hours

Preliminary Examination : The preliminary examination consists of two objective-type papers – General Studies Paper I and General Studies Paper II (CSAT). The General Studies Paper I covers subjects like Indian Polity and Governance, History of India and Indian National Movement, Economic and Social Development, and General Issues on Environmental Ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change. The General Studies Paper II (CSAT) covers subjects like Comprehension, Interpersonal Skills, Logical Reasoning and Analytical Ability, Decision Making and Problem-Solving, General Mental Ability, Basic Numeracy, and English Language Comprehension skills (of Class X level).
Mains Examination : The mains examination consists of nine papers – two qualifying papers (Paper A and Paper B) and seven papers on different subjects as per the choice of the candidate (Paper I to Paper VII). The two qualifying papers are:
Paper A: This paper is based on the Indian language selected by the candidate and is of 300 marks.
Paper B: This paper is based on English and is of 300 marks.
