The UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) is conducted in two stages

Preliminary Exam –

• Each paper is of 200 marks and 2 hours duration
• The minimum qualifying marks for each paper is 33%
• The marks obtained in the preliminary exam are not counted for the final ranking, but only for the purpose of shortlisting the candidates for the main exam.

Main Exam –

• The first two papers are of qualifying nature and the marks obtained in these papers are not counted for the final ranking
• The remaining seven papers carry a total of 1750 marks

Preliminary Examination : The preliminary examination consists of two objective-type papers – General Studies Paper I and General Studies Paper II (CSAT). Paper A: This paper is based on the Indian language selected by the candidate and is of 300 marks.
Paper B: This paper is based on English and is of 300 marks.

The seven papers on different subjects (Paper I to Paper VII) are of 250 marks each and are evaluated only if the candidate clears the qualifying papers. The subjects covered in the mains examination are:
